The cargo ship MV Rozen is heading for harbor when it is hijacked by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean. Amongst the men on board are the ship’s cook Mikkel (Pilou Asbæk) and the engineer Jan (Roland Møller), who along with the rest of the seamen are taken hostage in a cynical game of life and death. With the demand for a ransom of millions of dollars a psychological drama unfolds between the CEO of the shipping company (Søren Malling) and the Somali pirates.
I saw this one at 'The Best Little Art House in Utah' Art House Cinema 502 on 25th Street in Ogden.
This
it a bit of a difficult film to watch. There are no heroes just
ordinary men coping with being forced into impossible situations, doing
what they must do to survive and to save the lives of others. The
director has rejected the temptation to make a big budget action film
instead to tell an intense, harrowing, sensitive, dramatic thriller, a
story based on actual events. Similar stories continue to play out over
and over in these dangerous seaways.
Be advised that the following trailer is rated R, and includes harsh language.
The events in the film just make you wish for death and destruction to the loathsome Muslim extremist Somali pirates for subjecting innocent people to such pain, stress and psychological terrorism. Not only for the hostages but also those required to negotiate for their release. Giving in just once and paying the ransom will only lead to more hostages being taken...fail to pay the ransom and the hostages will be killed. It's an untenable situation, one that has no winners except the pirates and that is why the hijackings will continue until the shipping companies arm their ships and blow the human slime out of the water as soon as they get within firing range of another ship. Only then will they stop their raids.
In this particular hijacking incident the crew and negotiators suffered through about 5 months before the hostages were finally released by the pirates.
In his film A Hijacking, director Tobis Lindholm has enlisted a former hostage negotiator who brings with him hard won expertise and experience ensuring authenticity and realism for his film. Gary Skjoldmose Porter essentially plays himself, he was the company’s
security adviser during the actual events that inspired the film. Read more
