Dirty Words - Review

Bad Words
(2014 - March 28)
Comedy
1 hr. 29 min.

Rated: R | Crude and vulgar gratuitous sexual content, brief nudity and Language. Common Sense Media says Pause for kids 16 & under. In my opinion kids 16 and 17 should not be subjected to this trash...18 and older shouldn't be subjected to this trash, which includes a 9 year old encouraged to use profane language and succeeds in getting him to do so but the bad behavior is not limited him swearing. Expect to hear repeatedly most of the words from the worst list. Read more

Grade: D+

Director: Jason Bateman
Writer: Andrew Dodge (screenplay)
Stars: Jason Bateman, Kathryn Hahn, Allison Janney | See full cast and crew

Warning this is the R rated trailer, it contains profanity.

Jason Bateman ("Identity Thief") makes his feature directorial debut with the subversive comedy "Bad Words." Bateman stars as Guy Trilby, a 40-year-old who finds a loophole in the rules of The Golden Quill national spelling bee and decides to cause trouble by hijacking the competition. Contest officials, outraged parents, and overly ambitious 8th graders are no match for Guy, as he ruthlessly crushes their dreams of victory and fame. As a reporter (Kathryn Hahn of "We're the Millers") attempts to discover his true motivation, Guy finds himself forging an unlikely alliance with a competitor: awkward 10-year-old Chaitanya (Rohan Chand of "Homeland"), who is completely unfazed by Guy’s take-no-prisoners approach to life.

It seems that Jason Bateman has joined the ranks of the actors/writers/directors that feel a need to showcase their lack or morals by shoving it up your nose on screen. Dragging a child, Rohan Chand his co-star, through the gutter and calling upon him to use vulgar language and to do things things that in most communities would put the adult at risk of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and possibly child abuse, is just plain wrong, but Hollywood gets a pass hiding behind claims of artistic integrity and freedom of expression. The abuse of children doesn't stop with Chand, but all the other child actors are subjected to vulgarity and profanity as well.
Bateman is a talented actor and comedian but continues to tarnishes his image here in his directorial debut. Beyond the above weaknesses the story is predictable and trite and ends just where it could have moved forward possibly redeeming itself.
The mystery of the film is the motivation for why Guy Trilby (Bateman) is doing what he is doing, but what is this 40 year old going to at the end of his spelling bee stunt, once his goal has been met and his motive has been exposed. This would have made a much more compelling story. The real story is left unresolved.
What could have been a charming, funny morality tale, instead becomes a vulgar, trashy, narcissistic exploit with little social redeeming value and very little humor. The film does have a few clever lines and a couple of laughs but they are not worth the hour and 29 minutes of your life.

Mr. Peabody & Sherman - Movie Review

Mr. Peabody & Sherman
(2014 - March 7)
Animation | Adventure | Comedy
1 hr. 32 min.
Rated: PG  | Brief Rude Humor and Some Mild Action
Grade: C+

Director: Rob Minkoff
Writers: Jay Ward (based on the series produced by), Craig Wright (screenplay), 3 more credits
Stars: Ty Burrell, Max Charles, Stephen Colbert | See full cast and crew

Mr. Peabody (Ty Burrell), the most accomplished canine in the world, and his boy, Sherman (Max Charles), use a time machine called the Wabac to embark on outrageous adventures. However, when Sherman takes the Wabac without permission to impress his friend Penny (Ariel Winter), he accidentally rips a hole in the universe and causes havoc with world history. It's up to Mr. Peabody to mount a rescue and prevent the past, present and future from being permanently altered.

Mr. Peabody & Sherman arrived in theaters not quite  via the 'way back' but indeed with high expectations for oldsters that grew up on the original Jay Ward cartoons from the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show of the late 50s and 60s.

Unfortunately the remake is rather bland and lacks the freshness of the original TV series. It's not that it's a horrible animated film, it's just not an exceptional film. There have been so many animated films as of late and they are all pretty much on the same level, serviceable and perhaps entertaining for the kids but not so much for the parents who take them. I saw the 3D version and wouldn't recommend it, it has little to add to the experience, just a way for the studio to charge more for the tickets.

Mr. Peabody & Sherman's animation harkens back to the paintings of banal big eyed waifs of the 60s. There are Lots of celebrities who voices lend their talents to the story, , , (to name just a few),  which might be enough to hold the interest of some viewers but it wasn't enough to win me over. It lacks the simple charm of the original. The screenplay could have benefited from more puns and a little less of the convoluted story line.

Like a lot of the current wave of animated films it feels like it was made solely for the purpose of raking in some cash from the built in audience of nostalgia driven parents and the introduction of some new cartoon characters for the wee ones but in the end there isn't enough charm or double entandre humor in the puns to do justice to the original material. There is some mildly rude humor but nothing raunchy and no profanity so it is safe for viewing with the entire family.

Muppets Most Wanted - Movie Review

Muppets
Most Wanted
 (2014 - March 21)
Adventure | Comedy | Crime
1 hr 46 min
Rated: PG | Some Mild Action Common Sense Media says OK for kids 5+. Read more
Grade: C

Director: James Bobin
Writers: James Bobin, Nicholas Stoller, Jim Henson (based on) (as Disney's Muppet properties and characters)
Stars: Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell, Tina Fey | See full cast and crew

Muppets Most Wanted takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour, selling out grand theaters in some of Europe’s most exciting destinations, including Berlin, Madrid and London. But mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine—the World’s Number One Criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit—and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, aka Number Two, portrayed by Ricky Gervais. The film stars Tina Fey as Nadya, a feisty prison guard, and Ty Burrell as Interpol agent Jean Pierre Napoleon.

Disney's Muppets Most Wanted is directed by James Bobin (The Muppets (2011), Flight of the Conchords (2007), Da Ali G Show (2003)) and produced by David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman. Bobin co-wrote the screenplay with Nicholas Stoller, (The Muppets (2011), Get Him to the Greek (2010), Fun with Dick and Jane (2005)) who is also executive producer with John Scotti (The Incredible Hulk (2008), Bad Boys II (2003), The Rock (1996)). Featuring music from Academy Award®-winning songwriter Bret McKenzie (The Muppets, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, Flight of the Conchords (2007), Dancing with the Stars, The Simpsons).
Lots of talent in the cast, loads of cameos from a wide array of stars and personalities can not save this movie. The jokes are tired, there is nothing new or interesting to breathe life into this 'sequel' that they proclaim in their opening musical number that they are about to make.
The performances by the Muppet's 'human' costars are lackluster and humorless as that of the Muppets. They are colorful, if that is a plus. How many times must we see Miss Piggy chase after Kermit the frog.
Ricky Gervais has zero screen presence and no comic timing in this film. He can be funny so I assume it is the writing and direction that is the problem here.

Ty Burrell is about as funny as he is on 'Modern Family' i.e. NOT, and again, he can be funny so it must be the writing and the direction holding him back as well.
Tina Fey really got on my last good nerve. Her tired sophomoric shtick is so boring on the snooze-fest '30 Rock' and it is equally ineffective here... but if that is your cup of tea...you may just enjoy this film. Personally, I couldn't wait for it to end. Its 1 hr. 46 min. running time felt more like 3 1/2. I didn't grow up watching the Muppets and they are not endearing characters for me but are silly, juvenile and humor-free. Perhaps I'm just getting old and crabby.
The concept that the Muppets can not tell the difference between their best friend Kermit and the evil Constantine with a Russian accent is insipid and tedious and the basis for the whole story. Kids will probably enjoy Muppets Most Wanted but I feel for the parents that must sit through it with them.
Muppets Most Wanted is at least free of crude, sexual innuendo, nudity and profanity. It is safe for children of all ages.
